How is database management used in the industry?
INTRODUCTION
In this digital era, companies must be able to keep up with the rapid development of information systems. Companies must be more competitive in the midst of a global competition to be superior in achieving their goals. Implementing database management can help companies to develop better. The industry nowadays is constantly changing and evolving. This is caused by many industries’ entire operations being automated. This automated system generates data every second that must be recorded, tracked, and updated constantly to ensure that the industry runs efficiently. These data are one of the company’s greatest assets because it gives information that can be used to achieve goals or targets.
We might not realize it, but database examples are everywhere, for example, sales data; these data are essential to creating accounting reports, calculating sales estimates, and building customer invoices and other data that can be useful for industry nowadays. Whether or not you know much about them, their effect on your daily life is extensive. From weather applications to the movies you watch online, databases support nearly every service you use regularly. As the world increasingly runs on technology, the database management industry has evolved to handle increasing data needs from social media, e-commerce, and other high-tech sectors. The recent pandemic increased economic reliance on the internet and the use of data, driving the growth of the database management market.
DISCUSSION
Before deepening database management, we must know a database’s essential aspects. A database is a set of related data organized to be easily stored, changed, and accessed at any time. There are various ways in which databases can be managed. One of the most popular databases today is a relational database, consisting of rows and columns in tables. Most of these databases use SQL for querying data.
After we know the main aspects that lead to this, we can move on to database management. Database management is ingesting, storing, organizing, and maintaining the data created and collected by an organization. Effective data management is crucial in deploying the IT systems that run business applications and provide analytical information to help drive operational decision-making and strategic planning by corporate executives, business managers, and other end users. Database management can improve your data processes and increase the business value of your organization’s data assets, freeing users from repetitive and time-consuming data processing tasks. Database management enables the organization to retrieve and store vital data through defined formats and structures. Database management can manage data in a way that allows employees to work efficiently, whether taking calls at an office or developing a website from home. Enhanced data integrity, data backup, integration, and security are all top benefits of database management. Minimizing data redundancy is also why enterprise-level companies work with this software.
How is database management used in the industry?
• Help brand managers track and sell products.
A proper database system can allow managers to add new data, update existing data, and delete old or unused data from the system. Furthermore, this enables the industry to track their order and sell products more efficiently.
• Consistent data that complies with regulations
Before database management, each department usually had its own set of applications or data. It can lead to inconsistency with much of the same data in different departments. Data inconsistency can lead to bad decision-making, wrong information, and many more, which can cause more harm to the company. But now, proper database management will ensure that all data are consistent for all departments.
• End-user productivity increase
Database management will increase productivity; this is possible because all data needed for decision-making to improve performance are available for everyone in the company.
• Effective data integration
Implementing a database management system will promote a more integrated picture of your operations by quickly illustrating how processes in one segment of the organization affect other parts. What once was done entirely manually can now be fully automated and more accurate.
• Better decision making
Decisions built on data are only as good as the information used. A database management system helps provide a framework to facilitate data quality initiatives. Better data management procedures generate higher-quality information, leading to better organizational decision-making.
In its implementation, an industry must feel the advantages and disadvantages of database management. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of database management are as follows:
The advantages:
- Reduce data duplication or data redundancy.
- Maintain data consistency and integrity.
- Improve data security.
- Increase the efficiency and effectiveness of data use.
- Increase productivity of data users.
Meanwhile, the disadvantages:
- Requires a specific skill to perform database administration and management to obtain optimal data structures and relationships.
- Requires storage capacity, both external (disk) and internal (memory), so database management can work quickly and efficiently.
- The need for resources is usually relatively high.
- Price of a reliable database management system is usually costly.
- Conversion from the old system to the database management is sometimes costly; training costs are also required in addition to hardware and software procurement.
CONCLUSION
As the importance of collecting, storing, and analyzing data increases daily, improving database management systems will continue to help businesses perform data management tasks and achieve more productive results. A company’s performance is highly dependent on implementing its database management system. Suppose the company has implemented database management to its full potential. In that case, it will have superior value compared to other competing companies because good or bad company performance can be seen from the software used by companies in managing data. Therefore, implementing a database
The management system is very important for companies so that companies stay relevant and can compete amidst increasingly fierce global competition.
