Addressing the Lack of Information System Security in Indonesia
For as long as we know, technology has been a part of our everyday life. It concerns every little thing we done, from entertainment to online transactions. And what people thought of having privacy on the net is a pure lie.
People live their own private lives, and, in the constitution, there is something called UU ITE that includes the privacy law. So, everyone has. the right to privacy by law. However, is it really protected?
“We live in a world where we feel like losers and feel the need to share everything we have done, everything we have with the entire world. So, we share our private lives. And sometimes, we steal them. Or at times, for our personal interest, we collect, analyze, and use other people’s private lives. “I just quoted a few words from the recent drama called Private Lives. Are we really living a private life?
Information Security in Indonesia
Indonesia as a developing country has a slow growth on the technology aspect. this is influenced by the large country Indonesia is. That resulted in some areas being metropolitan cities like Jakarta and some areas are still set back in all sorts of aspects whether it being technologies or infrastructure.
Having weak cybersecurity caused Indonesia to be attacked by many individuals or group. The most recent and big case of lack of cybersecurity is the infamous Tokopedia data leak. Tokopedia is one of the biggest online shopping platforms nationally. They have even branched out to foreign countries by hiring the most influential entertainer, BTS, as a brand ambassador. But in March 2020, 91,000,000 user data are leaked. It is reported that the data contains emails, password hashes and names. And from 91 millions of data leaked, 15 million users are affected. Not only Tokopedia, but many other individuals or groups became a victim from the lack of information security provided.
Stolen Data Market
Taken from the statistics by statista.com, the price of stolen data could range from $429-$78 (in US currency). The highest being health category and any public category. It is not stated how much data is per that price but, in another source (keepersecurity.com) it is stated that the price for a Spotify account detail is about $2.75 and for your complete medical record one could pay up to $1000.
Despite its lacking in cybersecurity, Indonesia is still lacking in concern toward this issue. But some companies have made a plan to increase the budget for cybersecurity especially when cyber-attacks are at their peak during this pandemic era.
Despite having a plan on increasing cybersecurity. Only some company that could afford it plans to. Majority of the company Indonesia still think this is unimportant. And in my opinion, Indonesia will have to go a long way before reaching the awareness of the importance of guiding their privacy form cyber-attacks.
