Data and Knowledge Management Implementation in Companies and Their Procedure

Background (objectives and goals) 

Now companies or organizations have started to replace their systems. Accompanied by technological developments, this system changeover is getting faster and better. Companies and organizations that have made these changes usually have an open mind and they are of course updated with technological developments. 

To develop its business, a company or organization is required to look ahead and be able to understand the market. One of the ways they can understand the market is by conducting a consumer analysis. How consumers act and what consumers are often looking for these days, is an easy target to understand them. 

With the formation of this system, it is hoped that the company can develop its business. In addition, this is made to help the wider community know exactly what companies are doing to develop their business? And that’s where the wider community will understand this system. By looking at the results of the existing field, it will certainly make it easier for them later. 

Therefore, the things I discuss are data and knowledge management. As one of the students studying information systems, I would like to write an article on this subject. As we know this material is one of the sub topics studied in information systems. 

Data and knowledge management is material about managing data within an organization. Material that is closely related to big data. How does their system actually work? What kind of companies have implemented it? How does this system relate to big data? 

 

Data and Knowledge Management  

Data and knowledge management, from the name itself, you can imagine that this material learns how we process data to become information and knowledge. The following is the understanding of data and knowledge management according to experts: 

  • Management activities and processes to leverage the growth and development of knowledge within the organization by managing knowledge to increase the company’s competence through improving the process of creating and creating individual and organizational knowledge. [CWA, 2004] 
  • A systematic process for finding, selecting, organizing, extracting, and presenting knowledge in a certain way, so that workers are able to utilize and improve their mastery of knowledge in a specific field of study, then there is an institutional process so that the knowledge created becomes company knowledge. [Jann Dan Lantu, 2006] 

 

Discussion 

The operation of this system is not easy and has to go through quite a long phase. First of all, a company or organization is required to collect data. Of course, these data do not only come from one source. These sources include internal company sources, external sources, personal sources, or even clickstream data. Apart from its various sources, data also has two different types. There are transactional data and master data. It is quite clear that transactional data is data generated from business activities, whereas master data is data that combines and evaluates transactional data, and then stored in a database. 

This database can accommodate a lot of data. Usually a data will be piped to each unit after they enter this database. In the database manager can add, delete, access, change, and analyze data in it. Of course, this database is equipped with security and user access. Because if not monitored, the entire database content could be compromised by irresponsible people. The system used in managing and securing the database is called a DBMS or Database Management System. The model in the system used is actually the same, but the most frequently used model is the relational model. Meanwhile, other models such as hierarchical and network models. 

In this database there is a record that has at least one primary key (field identifier). This is what led to the emergence of big data in its operation. Because it is impossible for a company to manage only one data, it is certain that the data they manage is very large and will continue to increase. Data in big data can be structured data (numeric, etc.) as well as unstructured data (email, images, etc.). 

Usually big data that is stored will be presented openly or closed. Later this big data will be taken to be examined. And then implementation will be carried out in accordance with existing research results. This of course is adjusted to the company first. They prioritize what the company needs to grow its business. With the help of analysis the results from the big exist. They will find answers to what they need to do to progress their business. 

We have already explained how this works and how it relates to big data. The next question is what kind of company uses this system? Companies that use big data in their systems are Amazon, Netflix, Starbucks, and many more. These three companies are very well known in the ears of the current generation. Amazon is one of the largest online retailers in the world. They use this system to manage names, addresses, payments and even search history for customers. They even store customer bank data, which is usually used for payments. Netflix is ​​a streaming service company. Netflix itself uses this data to view the search history of their users and in addition they use this system to assign globally interesting original content and purchase the rights to films and series. Starbucks is a large coffee company that also provides a café. They use this system to see the potential of a location. They take traffic, demographics and customer behavior into account. They will consider these three things before opening a shop. 

 

Summary and closing 

In conclusion, the system used to manage this process is not easy and takes a long time to process. A company or organization also needs a lot of data. Therefore big data is formed in the process. Big data that has been collected from various sources will then be stored in data warehouses. In this time-consuming management, these data are finally collected to conduct research. The results of the research will arrive and be taken by the company and are intended to consider a decision making. Not a few companies are already using this system. In addition, companies that implement this system also diverse. That way the company can develop its business. Most of them take advantage of this system to understand their customers and see new trading opportunities.
