How BPR Can Help a Company
Traditional Business Process in a Company
Every company or organization in this world will always have a business process. A business process is a set of activities that needs to be done in order to achieve certain goals. Business process is what makes a company able to run and do its work. Business processes consists of procurement, production, distribution, sales and marketing, financing, and many more. These business processes are very crucial in a company. Since the world is ever changing and technology continues to develop, the company must make sure that they’re business process is still relevant and adapting to the company’s needs.
Usually when a company first starts, they do things manually. From the storing of the company’s information to the business sales is usually done manually or requires human intervention. For example, ordering a ticket in a cinema. The business process of selling a movie ticket is first customers are required to go to the cinema then they can buy a movie ticket from the ticket booth. This applies to every company, usually it is required for a customer to go the company’s place or branch to browse the items or services, and then the decision to buy something is made. Nowadays, this business process is very inefficient, time consuming, and from the customer’s perspective, it may burden them. To increase efficiency and favor the customer, technology can be used to eliminate these human interventions.
Technology and BPR
If we want to start using technology for our business processes, we can’t just instantly swap it. There are steps that needs to be done to ensure that the implementation is successful and no gaps were left out. The first thing that we should do is BPR. BPR stands for Business Process Reengineering. If you have heard of BPR then you would also know BPM, which stands for Business Process Management. BPR and BPM are different. BPR is basically resetting the current business process into a better business process with the use of technology while BPM is improving the current business process with some adjustments. If we use the cinema example, BPR is using an application to book a movie ticket while BPM is improving the line to buy a ticket.
Doing BPR first will help us understand what is in our current business process. If we know the details or insides of the business process, it will show us what needs to be fixed or what needs to be improved. With BPR, the complex business processes will be broken down into the simpler business processes and we can check if there are any problems with the simpler business processes before putting it all back together. This will ensure that the improved business process will have less flaws than the previous one. During the BPR, we must also check if the technology that we will use can facilitate the improved business process. We don’t want to finish mapping what the application for the cinema will be like with no technology that can support this.
After we finish the mapping of the improved business process, we can start making it into a reality with the technology that we will use. The technology we use for our improved business process can be through an application or a website, or using an ERP, SCM, or CRM software.
Conclusion
The world is always changing, especially its technology. To make sure we are in sync with the situation of the world and its technology, we need to constantly improve our company’s business process. One of the ways to improve it is to use technology to eliminate any human intervention. Using technology can increase efficiency can decrease any human errors. But before we can implement the technology, we must do BPR. If we do BPR first, we can improvise and fix any problems with the current business process and with an increased understanding of the current business process, we can make sure that the implementation is successful.
