Oracle database adalah sekumpulan data yang diperlakukan sebagai sebuah kesatuan (unit). Tujuan dari database adalah menyimpan dan mengambil informasi. Sebuah server database adalah kunci untuk menyelesaikan masalah dalam pengelolaan informasi. Oracle database adalah database pertama yang didesign untuk enterprise grid computing (pengumpulan sumber daya komputer dari berbagai lokasi untuk mencapai tujuan bersama). Oracle database ini merupakan yang paling fleksibel dan cara yang efektif untuk mengelola biaya informasi dan aplikasi.

Aplikasi Oracle ini dibuat dan dipasarkan oleh perusahaan Oracle Corporation. Larry Ellison dan dua temannya dan rekan kerjanya, Bob Miner dan Ed Oates, memulai sebuah konsultan yang disebut SDL (Software Development Laboratories) di tahun 1977. SDL (Software Development Laboratories) membuat versi Oracle software yang asli. Ide nama Oracle didapatkan dari nama kode proyek yang Ellison kerjakan ketika dia masih bekerja di Ampex (perusahaan elektronik). Ellison mendapatkan inspirasi dalam membuat Oracle ini dari naskah yang ditulis oleh Edgar Frank Codd pada sistem manajemen relasional database (RDBMS) yang bernama “A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks.”

SDL (Software Development Laboratories) mengubah namanya menjadi Relational Software, Inc (RSI) pada tahun 1979, kemudian mengubah lagi namanya menjadi Oracle Systems Corporation di tahun 1982. Pada tahun 1995, Oracle Systems Corporation mengubah namanya menjadi Oracle Corporation, resmi bernama Oracle tetapi terkadang sering disebut Oracle Corporation.

  1. 1979: offers the first commercial SQL RDBMS
  2. 1983: offers a VAX-mode database
  3. 1984: offers the first database with read-consistency
  4. 1986: offers a client-server DBMS
  5. 1987: introduces UNIX-based Oracle applications
  6. 1988: introduces PL/SQL
  7. 1992: offers full applications implementation methodology
  8. 1995: offers the first 64-bit RDBMS
  9. 1996: moves towards an open standards-based, web-enabled architecture
  10. 1999: offers its first DBMS with XML support
  11. 2001: becomes the first to complete 3 terabyte TPC-H world record
  12. 2002: offers the first database to pass 15 industry standard security evaluations
  13. 2003: introduces what it calls “Enterprise Grid Computing” with Oracle10g
  14. 2005: releases its first free database, Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (XE)
  15. 2008: Smart scans in software improve query-response in HP Oracle Database Machine / Exadata storage
  16. 2013: begins use of Oracle 12c which is capable of providing cloud services with Oracle Database
