I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to study abroad, especially in Japan. I chose to study at Kindai University not only because of my interest in Japanese culture and nature, but also because of its perfect location in Osaka. Ever since my short trip to Japan, I knew I had to return and experience studying here at least once in my life. For anyone considering studying abroad, I highly recommend it. It’s an eye-opening experience that completely changes your perspective and way of thinking. The friends I made during my time here are amazing—it’s hard to put into words how meaningful these connections are.

During my semester at Kindai University, I took courses like Business Studies, Japanese Conversation, and Japanese Budo class. I quickly discovered that the teaching style in Japan is very different from what I was used to in Indonesia. Everything, from the projects to the exams, had a unique approach. My interactions with professors and local students were fantastic. The professors were incredibly welcoming and open to students from diverse backgrounds—they were fun, talkative, and genuinely engaging. The Japanese students were also very friendly. They didn’t see us as outsiders, but instead, they were eager to get to know us (the exchange students), and I enjoyed spending time with them. If I could turn back time, I want to re-experience everything again. I quite miss spending time with my friends in Japan.

Adjusting to Japanese culture was both challenging and exciting. From the public transportation system, dining etiquette, and how to speak to elders, to our daily habits—it was all very different from what I was used to in Indonesia. Though there were some challenges, like the language barrier. Even with those, I still enjoyed the experience. It was refreshing and completely different from my daily life back home.

I also had the chance to participate in a variety of activities, both at Kindai University and in local events. I got to experience the Summer Festival, joined the Japanese Martial Arts and Kadou (Flower Arrangement) clubs, and took part in numerous campus events like the Rock Music Festival and meet-up events at Kindai’s E-cube Building. One highlight was competing in a local competition in Kyoto, where I not only made new friends but also competed alongside local residents. Japan has so many events and festivals, and I loved being part of them.

One of the biggest challenges was the language barrier. The Japanese I had learned from movies or textbooks was quite different from what locals actually use in daily life. However, I managed to overcome this by attending conversation classes offered by Kindai University, which were incredibly helpful for everyday interactions.

This study abroad experience has truly changed my life, both academically and personally. I’ve gained more confidence and independence, and it has inspired me to consider pursuing a master’s degree in Japan.

I highly recommend the study abroad program hosted by BINUS University for anyone looking for a transformative, valuable, and exciting experience. Studying at Kindai University has enriched my life in so many ways and opened my eyes to global opportunities.
