In this given opportunity, our team discusses Electronic waste or known as e-waste. E-waste has been a severe problem globally as the number rises and people tend to be aware from the last two years globally, but in our country, Indonesia, this issue hasn’t really been brought up so local citizens also aren’t aware of this issue.

From Trash to Treasure: Shrink Your Carbon Footprint in ASEAN by Tackling E-Waste!

We aim to foster a green economy in ASEAN by focusing on comprehensive e-waste management and carbon footprint reduction strategies. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovative approaches, we strive to create a sustainable and environmentally-conscious community that is well-equipped to tackle the challenges of climate change and waste management.

Facts that we can’t deny:

  • E-waste is the fastest growing solid waste stream in the world. In 2019, an estimated 53.6 million tonnes of e-waste were produced globally, but only 17.4% collected & recycled (WHO, 2023).
  • Indonesia as the biggest contributor, followed by Thailand (750 mill/kg) and Philippines (540 mill/kg) (The Global E-Waste Statistics Partnership, 2024)
  • Lead and americium, which can harm medical equipment, fire detectors, smoke detectors with active sensing elements, and smoke detectors, are two of the hazardous materials. Burning a lot of toxic materials releases dangerous toxins into the air, which increases carbon footprint.

Problems & Analysis

Globally, Asia region impacted 11% of contribution to e-waste. Hence, below are the primary causes of the rising volume of mismanaged e-waste:

  1. Rapid growth in e-waste volumes.
  2. Inadequate e-waste laws worldwide.
  3. Insufficient infrastructure for e-waste management.
  4. Formal vs. informal sector competition.
  5. Legal and illicit e-waste trading issues.

Though this seems a newbie issue we experience these days without our consideration, this has impacted a lot on carbon emission footprint that shown in the latest data that we get in 2022 regarding annual CO2 emission have the top three in Brunei, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Environmental Stress, ever heard that before? Yes, that’s what we’re experiencing right now…

Proposed Solution

Our solution are based on some step actions that we must take to prevent e-waste becoming uncontrollable.By incorporating participants and new partners to enhance the program, particularly in the EoL (End-of-Life Product) process, ASEAN will be ahead of the game if we implement these solutions for E-waste management. From spreading awareness and campaigns to educate people about e-waste impact to our environment and society, we can go through the leak detection emission monitoring by calculating our carbon footprint and acknowledging the standards. Here, we also mention some available partnerships that can handle e-waste as of now (14 June 2024) to involve in the disposal and recycling, refurbishing process.

Nonetheless, recovery management with key strategic e-waste systems at logistics are much needed, to classify the materials that can be second-handed or be renewed. With this solution roadmap, if everything is smooth and operating well, we’re sure that involved actions and regulatory implementation are paving pathways to greener economy, especially with Carbon Emission Saham or Carbon Emission Stocks (to attract locals for them get some fees in return to save electronic waste).

Conclusion

We hope that through our storyboard, viewers are encouraged to take actions to remind local communities and people around them to know about this issue. In this storyboard we can conclude our main three highlighted points are:

  • Effective E-Waste Management
We develop clear guidelines and practices across ASEAN to recycle and responsibly dispose of electronic waste, aiming to reduce environmental impact and carbon footprints.
  • Encouraging Green Innovations
Support and incentivize the growth of eco-friendly industries and innovative technologies for e-waste recycling, promoting sustainability and economic growth.
  • Community Education & Participation
Educate ASEAN communities about sustainable living and empower them to adopt low-carbon lifestyles, fostering environmental awareness and resilience to climate change.
